Henry Purcell

1659-1695 · Barocken

Henry Purcell är likt Mozart, Schubert och flera andra en i raden av kortlivade musikskapare. Icke desto mindre har han etablerat sig som en av de viktigaste kompositörerna i den engelska musikhistorien, överträffad i den brittiska barocken endast av Händel.

Purcell började sin bana som organist vid Westminster Abbey, sedan vid hovkapellet, småningom utnämnd till hovkompositör. En av plikterna vid hovet var att komponera oden till kungliga högtider, bland dem t.ex. Hail, bright Cecilia. Han komponserade mängder av verk tillägnade drottning Mary II, på hennes födelsedagar osv. När hon dog 1694 skrev han välkända Funeral music for Queen Mary.

Innan Henry Purcell själv gick bort året efter hade han dock hunnit etablera sig som en betydande kompositör för scenen. Han skrev förvisso endast en regelrätt genuin opera, Dido and Aeneas, men denna har samtidigt vunnit erkännande som hans kanske mest betydande verk.
